On Thursday night, a pilot was killed in a plane crash in Bardstown.

The crash happened in a field at approximately 6:30, near Ben Irvin Road and Samuels Field Airport, just outside the Bardstown city limits.

The pilot, 68-year-old John David Hall, of Bardstown, was pronounced dead at the scene. Hall was the only person on board the aircraft, a Bryant C. Crosby Ultra Pup, which hall built.

It’s unclear at this point what led the crash, but Hall’s family members said witnesses said they heard the engine sputtering just prior to the plane going down, according to a report on WAVE.com.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
