Grayson County’s Lady Cougar soccer team had to settle for the runner-up spot after the Meade County Lady Waves pitched a 6-0 shutout in the championship match of the girls’ 11th District Tournament Thursday evening at Butler County.

That means the Lady Cougars will go into next week’s 3rd Region Tournament, which will be held at Muhlenberg County, having to face a District champion in the first round. The draw is scheduled to be held Saturday when the team will learn who their first-round opponent will be.

The Lady Waves dominated play from the beginning of the match, holding possession in the Lady Cougar end of the field for much of the contest. Junior midfielder Dori Emig had a big game for the Lady Waves as she recorded a hat-trick, that is scoring three goals in the game. All of her goals came in the first half. Junior striker Abby Nelson added a pair of goals, while junior Abigail Susman scored the final goal of the night.

Emig opened the scoring in the 18th minute of play. Senior Shelbie Williams sent a corner kick into the six-yard box, where Emig was able to get her head on the ball and place it beyond the reach of Lady Cougar goal keeper Laura Vincent to make it 1-0.

Nelson made it 2-0 two minutes later when she sorted out a tangle in front of the Cougar goal and footed the ball into the left corner of the net.

In the 30th minute, Williams sent a beautiful cross into the six-yard box that was perfectly placed for Emig, who headed the ball just over the outstretched arms of Vincent to make it 3-0.

Emig then scored in the 32nd minute following a bullet of a shot that hit the underside of the cross bar and shot down just past the goal line. The half ended with the Lady Waves in front 4-0.

Meade kept up the pressure in the second half, but the Lady Cougars were able to fend them off until the 54th minute, when Nelson got to a loose ball right in front of the Lady Cougar goal and shot it into the back of the net to make it 5-0.

Susman scored the final goal in the 60th minute on a header following a superb pass from sophomore Amanda Thornsberry.

After the game, senior Brandi Minton and sophomore Kandler Lindsey were named to the 11th District All-Tournament Team.
