Lady Cougars beat St. Romuald twice; 40-13, 25-15

The middle school girls, playing against possibly a lesser opponent, won twice Monday evening at Cougar Gym, with the seventh-graders taking a 40-13 win and the eighth-winning for just the second time all season, 25-15.

SEVENTH-GRADE GAME

Behind Annie Kiper’s 16 points and six steals, the young Lady Cougar ran away from the visiting Rebels of St. Romuald. Kelsey Cornwell had four points and four steals, while Briley Renfrow did not score but led the team with four assists.

Mikah Lee scored five of her seven points in the first quarter as the Lady Cougars built a 15-3 lead heading into the second quarter. The Lady Cougars then increased their lead to 16 points at the halftime break.

Kiper took over in the third quarter, scoring 10 of her 16 points and all but two of her team’s third quarter total as the Lady Cougars increased their lead to 24 points, 35-11.

In addition to her seven points, Mikah Lee had three rebounds and two steals. Tori Carroll also scored four points and she led the team in rebounding with five boards despite not playing many minutes. Four players, Elizaabeth Lindsey, Kelsey Sneed, Hannah Franklin, and Coray Milam, all had two points, while Sydney Perkins had one to one to complete the Lady Cougars scoring.

EIGHTH-GRADE GAME

The eighth-graders took an early four-point lead in the first quarter, only to see the Rebels come back to tie the score with 1:44 remaining to be played in the first period. Cornwell scored on a lay-in with 31 seconds left to give the Lady Cougars a lead they would not give up the rest of the game.

The Lady Cougars led by five at the half, and by 12 heading into the final period of play.

Briley Renfrow led the Lady Cougars in scoring with seven points, and in steals with five. Cornwell scored four points grabbed five rebounds and pilfered two balls. Raigan Cave also scored six points, led the team with six rebounds and she added three steals.

Three players, Madelyn Henning, Hayle Poole and Mikah Lee all scored two points to round out the scoring.
