In a somewhat surprising move, the Leitchfield City Council, at the urging of Mayor William Thomason, decided to vote at the next scheduled meeting (December 4) on whether to table further discussions and research regarding a new City Hall and Leitchfield Police Department building.

Depending on the size of the building, the facility was projected to cost between $6.0 and $6.8 million and provide between 20,000 and 23,000 square feet of space for city hall administrators and LPD.

But the uncertainty of how state government will legislate downsizing the roughly $35 billion public pension plan shortfall has Mayor Thomason and council members concerned about the possible future financial burden city and county government must bear to aid in offsetting the pension shortage.

To this point, Brandstetter Carroll, a Lexington architecture firm, has made two presentations to the council concerning the proposed interior and exterior designs of the building, but the “point of no return” has not been reached on the project.
