The middle school seventh-grade Lady Cougars saw their season come to an end Monday evening in Greenville as the Hancock County Lady Hornets handed them a 44-19 beat-down in the semifinal round of the Green River Valley Conference Tournament, which is being contested at Muhlenberg South Middle School.

The seventh-grade girls got the best of Hancock when they played in Hawesville, but in the two games since then, the Lady Hornets have taken no prisoners. Their full-court press had the Lady Cougars befuddled from the start.

Hancock scored the first 10 points of the game before Kelsey Cornwell hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1:41 left in the first quarter. The Lady Hornets led 14-1 at the end of the period and the game was pretty much decided at that point.

When the Lady Hornets scored opening the second period, they led by 15 points, 16-1. Grayson County finally shook off their funk and began to play better, responding with 10 unanswered points to trail by just five, 16-11 with 1:14 left in the first half. The Lady Hornets then scored the last three points and led by eight, 19-11 at the half.

Hancock County then put the game away for good in the third quarter as they outscored Grayson County 18-4 to take a 22-point lead, 37-15 heading into the fourth quarter.

Annie Kiper led the Lady Cougars with seven points, while Cornwell added six. Three Lady Cougars, Briley Renfrow, Elizabeth Lindsey, and Emma Strange all scored two points to round out the Grayson County scoring.
