We have all heard the saying, “New Year-New Me,” but most of us don’t actually take it very seriously. Well, those words are my motivation for 2018, so I sat and did some reflecting on my life, habits, and overall self over the holiday weekend. I thought about some things that I like about myself, but then I also sat and pondered on the things I would like to improve on in 2018. I’m not sure if this is a common practice for everyone during a New Year, but it motivated me to think about how I can make this year a great year. So, here is a list of 10 Ways embrace the change of a new year and and really mean it when you say “New Year. New Me.”

  1. Change your mindset to believe that all things are possible-  Sometimes we find ourselves thinking, “I can’t do that” or “this will never work”. But, change your thoughts to believe that you can do something and you will be more motivated to work toward achievement…rather than just giving up or feeling powerless.
  2. Surround yourself with those you love the most- It’s no secret that when we are with our favorite people we feel more at ease and confident. Work throughout 2018 to meet up with friends and family more often just to simply laugh and enjoy each other’s company. This will result in increased mood and fun!
  3. Get outside and enjoy nature: We have a beautiful Earth, so let’s enjoy it! Take a walk, take up gardening, or whatever it is that you enjoy, just get outside and take in some fresh air.
  4. Sit down with your family for dinner (without electronic devices present)- Confession time: my husband and I eat every night with the TV on and our phones laying next to us. Occasionally, we are so preoccupied with everything else that we barely even talk during dinner. We mostly just rely on Modern Family or Brooklyn 99 to entertain us. Try taking the TV and phone away and see the changes that can take place between you and your family.
  5. Volunteer- Visit the elderly, read to children, or help out at a Food Distribution Center, or whatever you want to do to lend a hand. There are always organizations looking for help with their tasks. My ideal day of volunteering? Helping out at the local animal shelter!
  6. Take time to sit and meditate- This past weekend, I sat with a cup of coffee and just relaxed. I tried to clear my mind from anything that would bring negative or worrisome thoughts. I just sat and enjoyed the quietness around me. When I had to actually get up and start my day, I felt more refreshed and calm and ready to tackle new tasks.
  7. Give compliments to those who deserve them- Giving a kind word could make someone’s day. Sometimes I am guilty of taking people for granted and forgetting to tell them what a great job they have done. But knowing I could give a friend a pat on the back and lift them up, inspires me to speak out and give praise to those around me more often.
  8. Drink more water- Water helps hydrate your muscles and make them feel less tense and strained, which ultimately results in you feeling more relaxed. Plus, if you are looking to get in better shape in 2018, drinking more water is a great start to a healthier lifestyle.
  9. Make every day a new day- Don’t wake up with yesterday’s problems on your mind. The day has ended and nothing can be done about the past, so learn from those mistakes and make today a better day.
  10. Try something new that might seem a bit scary at first- Sometimes, I sit out on things that could be fun because I get too nervous or scared, such as kayaking. I think it would be a blast to go with a bunch of friends, but I have backed out multiple times when asked to do so. Embrace change and a little bit of fear this year, you may just find something new that you really enjoy!

Each of these changes are a way to better your overall lifestyle and work toward feeling more wholesome in your mind and soul. I’m excited to give them a try, what about you? Have you already made some changes in the New Year? If so, share them in the comments below!

Until next time.
