An Elizabethtown man turned himself into authorities after spanking a child so hard he left bruises.

Police said 32 year-old Derek Thompson called Child Protective Services to turn himself in after he spanked a 3- year-old child on Tuesday.

Thompson notified officials at around 7:00 Tuesday night that he spanked his girlfriend’s son at around noon, and later on noticed that he’d left several red marks and bruises on the child’s rear end, according to multiple media reports.

The Elizabethtown Police Department met with Thompson at his home on Kimball Drive, with police saying the bruising was “significant.”

Thompson was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal abuse of a child, a misdemeanor, and lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center. He has since been released from custody.
