Marshall County prosecutors said they will ask the court to try the alleged 15-year-old shooter as an adult.

Kentucky State Police Commissioner Richard Sanders said 20 students were injured in the shooting, with 16 students suffering gunshot wounds. Bailey Holt and Preston Cope, both 15, died from their injuries. All the victims were between the ages of 14 and 18, according to police.

Sanders said the suspect, armed with a handgun, walked into the school at 7:57 Tuesday morning and started randomly shooting. Sanders said the first 911 was made two minutes later, with police arriving on scene at 8:06.

Assistant County Attorney Jason Darnall and Marshall County prosecutor Jeffrey Edwards are asking the court to certify the alleged shooter as an adult, according to media reports. A grand jury could hear evidence in the case as soon as February 13.

The shooter, who hasn’t been named by authorities, is currently charged with two counts of murder, but will have at least a dozen first-degree assault charges added later. Prosecutors have previously said, at this point in the investigation, assault charges will be easier to prove in court than attempted murder. Both charges carry the same class B felony penalty, though, which calls for 10 to 20 years in prison if convicted.
