After leading by as many as 16 points in the first half, the Grayson County Cougars had to hang on desperately at the end to record a 62-61, overtime win over the homestanding Edmonson County Wildcats last Friday in Brownsville.
The Cougars (10-13) ended the first quarter with a 7-1 run to lead by eight points, 17-9 heading into the second period.
Bailey Logsdon’s free throw at the 3:36 mark of the second quarter capped a 12-4 run that doubled that lead to 16 points, 29-13. The Wildcats (8-16) then returned the favor, closing out the half with a 10-2 run that cut the margin back to eight points, 31-23 as the teams went to the locker rooms at the half.
Grayson County led by nine points, 35-26 following Bailey Logsdon’s lay-in at the 2:35 mark of the third quarter, but the Wildcats (8-16) got back-to-back lay-ups from Tucker Cole and a three-point shot from Dalton Decker to cut the Cougar lead to just two points, 35-33 with 47.6 seconds left. Wyatt Schultz ended the Wildcat run with a three-pointer with two-tenths of a second remaining to make it a five-point advantage, 38-33 at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Cougars still led by five points, 44-39 at the 3:43 mark when the Wildcats put together a 7-0 run that put them in front for the first time since early in the first quarter, 46-44 with 2:10 remaining to be played.
Josh Embry tied it at 46-46 with a lay-in at 1:54, and Logsdon hit two free throws with 1:08 left to put the Cougars back in front, 48-46, before Logan Lindsey scored with 51 seconds remaining to tie it once again at 48-48.
A Grayson County turnover with 31 seconds left gave the ball back to the Wildcats and led to Decker going to the foul line with 29 seconds left. His two free throws put the Cats in front by two, 50-48, but Logsdon confidently buried a pull-up jumper in the lane with 4.6 seconds left that tied it once again at 50-50, sending the game into overtime.
Edmonson’s Ryan Lindsey opened the scoring in OT with a three-pointer, but Logsdon hit a trey of his own at 3:10 to tie it again. The two teams traded baskets before Josh Embry went to the line for bonus free throws with 1:26 left. Embry hit both free throws to put his team in front to stay, 57-55.

The Wildcats then fouled Logan Majors with :12.2 showing on the clock and he hit both free throws to make it a two-possession game, 62-58. That turned out to be key for the Cougars as Decker beat the final buzzer with a three-pointer to make the winning margin just a single point, 62-61.
