At Tuesday afternoon’s Grayson County Fiscal Court meeting, Magistrates approved a resolution closing the intersection of Shaw Station Road and Mill Street, across the road from Peddler’s Mall.

Judge-Executive Kevin Henderson said possible business expansion, and the railroad crossing at the intersection being inherently dangerous – there have been multiple accidents at the intersection, most recently a semi-truck carrying lumber was struck by a train in the spring of 2017 – as the primary reasons for closing the intersection.

Judge Henderson said he spoke with Leitchfield Mayor William Thomason and Grayson County Jailer Jason Woosley (the Grayson County Detention Center is located on Shaw Station Road) about closing the intersection and both men approved of the closing.

“We have the jail expansion going on, we own some property over there (about 80 total acres), and we have the possibility of (adding) on to an industry we already have,” Judge Henderson said about the closing. “They could be possibly interested in buying that property. I’ve talked with the mayor and (Leitchfield City) Council members and they are actually wanting this done, also. We’ve got (with) Baillie’s (Lumber) and we got (with) Jason (Woosley), to make sure this will be okay.”

Judge Henderson added, “We’re looking for future expansion (of an existing industry), possibly, that’s why we’re wanting to get in front of the ball here to maybe get some more industry in here with the property the county has left over; after we do our jail expansion.”
