The Cougar softball team continued its perfect streak through the 12th District last Friday with a 12-2 whitewash of the visiting Edmonson County LadyCats in six innings.

Winning pitcher Embry Thorpe probably should have had a shutout as both runs scored by the LadyCats were unearned. Thorpe pitched all seven inning, allowing seven hits while walking no one and striking out seven.

The Cougars were relentless at the plate as they pounded out 16 hits against a pair of Edmonson County pitchers. Leadoff hitter, Kenzie Renfrow, went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and a pair driven in. Thorpe was also 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Mikayla Clark had three hits and two runs scored, while Lindsay O’Neal was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two driven in. Rachel Snyder had a pair of singles and drove in two runs.

The game was pretty much decided in the first inning when the Cougars sent 12 batters to the plate against Edmonson starter and loser, Shea Van Meter, and scored eight runs. Renfrow had a single and double in the inning, scored twice and drove in two. O’Neal doubled and drove in two, and Thorpe also doubled in two runs.

The LadyCats scored their first run in the third inning when a throw to second base from catcher Bailey Snyder was over everyone’s head and went into centerfield, allowing Katie Lindsey to score from third base.

Edmonson scored their other run in the fifth, when catcher Mariena Thomas reached on an O’Neal error and later came around to score on a Taylor Minyard double.

Grayson County scored a single run in the fourth on a Clark double and a single by Rachel Snyder. They scored twice in the fifth inning with Thorpe doubling in Renfrow, then Bailey Snyder singling in Erin Ashley, who had entered as a courtesy runner for Thorpe.

The Cougars scored their final run to end the game by the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth. O’Neal singled leading off, moved to second when Rachel Snyder walked, then was safe at third when Lindsey, the LadyCat’s second pitcher, tried unsuccessfully to get a force there on Emily Akins’ come-backer.

With one out and Renfrow at the plate with an 0-2 count, Lindsey uncorked a wild pitch, which allowed O’Neal to cross the plate and end the game.

The Cougars are now 7-6 for the season and a perfect 3-0 in district play.
