The Lady Cougar basketball team kicked off its summer schedule Thursday morning with a pair of games at Larue County High School, in Hodgenville.

With five of their players who will be seeing considerable floor time this season fresh off their run in the softball regional, it was not expected that there would be great consistency in the games and that turned out to be the case. Missed shots and errant passes outnumbered great plays, but that is what the summer season is all about. By the end of the month, with several games under their belt, the muscle memory should return.

The format for the games was two halves of 18 minutes each, with the clock running continuously, except in the final minute of play in each half.

In the first game, the Lady Cougars faced the Lady Generals of Thomas Nelson High. While they held leads in both the first and second halves, the Lady Cougars ran out of gas at the end and fell 31-28.

In the second game, they faced Christian Academy of Louisville (CAL). They stayed with them in the first half, but a 10-0 run at the start of the second half doomed them to defeat, 46-30.

Thomas Nelson

This game started out as a close one, with three ties and five lead changes occurring in the first half. A three-pointer from junior Bailey Snyder at the 7:23 mark gave Grayson County a 10-8 lead, but Thomas Nelson answered with an 8-2 run closing out the half to lead by four, 16-12 at the half.

The Lady Generals scored the first five points of the second half to take their largest lead of the game, nine points at 21-12 with 12:35 left to play.

Grayson County came to life at that point, outscoring the Lady Generals 12-2 to take a 24-23 lead with 4:40 left to play. Thomas Nelson responded with back-to-back three-pointers to go back in front, this time to stay.

Junior Kenzie Renfrow led the Lady Cougars with 10 points and she added four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Snyder finished with six points and seven rebounds, while her sophomore sister, Rachael Snyder, added five points and four rebounds.

Senior Kaylee Masden had four points, while junior Laura Vincent scored three points and led the team with nine rebounds.

CAL

The Lady Centurions led for most of the first half after scoring the first six points of the game. A lay-in at the 11:40 mark gave them their largest lead of the first half, nine points at 17-8.

But the Lady Cougars began fighting back at that point, outscoring the Lady Centurions 13-4. Bailey Snyder’s three-pointer with 49 seconds left capped the run and tied the score at 21-21.

That would be as close as the Lady Cougars would get to a lead, though. CAL scored the last two points of the first half to take a 23-21 lead into the intermission, then scored the first 10 points of the second half to take complete control of the game. Their largest lead of the game came at 17 points with a little over seven minutes left to play.

Renfrow led the Lady Cougars in scoring again with 11 points, and she added four rebounds and two assists. Vincent finished with nine points and she added four rebounds. Sophomore Ella Robinson scored five points and led the team on the boards with five rebounds.

Bailey Snyder scored three points, while Gracie Franklin had two to complete the scoring.
