The start of the school year has approached us faster than we expected. It begins next week… just 7 days away! The first day is always fun and exciting, but it’s also full of anxiety and worry. Your kids are excited about a new classroom or school… and you’re worried about having everything prepared and ready for their big day.

Do the last minute school supply runs make your head hurt? Do you cringe at the thought of an unorganized morning? Help calm your fears and ease your worries with these Back-To-School tips.

Meet the new teacher.
It’s always a scary thing for kids to go into a classroom with a teacher they don’t know. Take advantage of the school’s open house. Breaking the ice early on is one of the best ways to calm everyone’s fears. Some teachers welcome phone calls or e-mails — another great opportunity to get to know each other before the year begins.

Tour the school.
Be sure to go to your school’s open house and familiarize your child with his/her environment. Visit the classroom, find their desk, and explore. Once your child knows where they’re going on the first day their nerves will being to subside.

Connect with friends.
Friendly faces always make a difference when it comes to heading back to school. Refresh your child’s friendships. Try contacting parents from last year’s class and find out which kids are in your child’s class and set up a time to get them together.

Prepare your child (and yourself).
Get the lists of school supplies, books and technology your kids will need. Make sure they understand what to expect on the first day. Get everything ready to go so you won’t have to worry the day of.

Get your kids involved.
Find programs that you kids can do after school to keep them active. There is a lot of opportunities for your child to explore beyond their class room. Create a list of fun after-school activities and games to keep them entertained.

Ease into the routine.
Switching back to a school schedule from a summer schedule is very very hard. Avoid first-day-of-school craziness by establishing a regular routine now. Routines help children feel comfortable. Set a bedtime, set the alarms, go through morning rituals. This will help your morning go smoother.

Establish a set “Family Time”.
Whether it’s during dinner or before bed, don’t forget to find time to talk with your family about their day and things they have learned.

Take a breath!
Don’t forget to relax and enjoy time with your children as they grow.

Until next time!
