Playing like a well-oiled machine, the Lady Waves of Meade County rolled past the Grayson County Lady Cougars 6-0 Thursday evening in the championship game of the 11th District Tourament.

Grayson County was playing without its leading scorer, sophomore Gillian Johnston, but it was unlikely that the outcome would have been much different had she played as the Lady Waves controlled the action from the start and only an all-out defensive effort on behalf of the Lady Cougars kept the final score from being any worse.

Senior Dori Emig scored three times for the Lady Waves and senior teammate Abby Nelson added two more scores, while the Lady Cougars did not have a shot on goal the entire evening.

Emig scored the only goal the Lady Waves would need in the 11th minute of play off a corner kick. Nelson took the kick and put a perfect ball to the back post, where Emig headed it past Cougar goalie Laura Vincent to make it 1-0.

Emig scored again in the 22nd minute to make it 2-0. Taking a cross from Nelson, Emig settled the ball, turned 180 degrees past the Grayson defender and fired a left-footed shot that found the net.

Just a few minutes before the half, the Waves scored once again off a corner. The kick was deflected as it came toward the Cougar goal. Freshman Cheyenne Stafford was in perfect position to receive the deflection and the ball glanced off her hip and into the net to make it 3-0 at the half.

Less than a minute into the second half Emig had a shot carom off the crossbar and she shook her head as she went back upfield, but a minute later she scored again to make it 4-0. That left little doubt about the final outcome, but Nelson added a pair of goals, one in the 59th minute and the last one with less than two minutes to play to make the final score 6-0.

Both teams will move on to the 3rd Region tournament, which will be played next week at Meade County.
