Wednesday at approximately 3:45, Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall responded to a single-car accident in the 8000 block of Grayson Springs Road.

When Grayson County Dispatch alerted authorities to the accident, Duvall was near the area of the wreck and arrived within minutes. Upon arriving, he found 52-year-old Calvin C. Higgs injured, but alert and conscious after he flipped a Mercury Cougar while coming out of a curve on the wet roadway.

According to Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Fred Norder, the westbound vehicle slid across both lanes of the roadway and traveled in a ditch line before striking an embankment and overturning. The vehicle then slid on its roof and back onto the roadway, completely blocking the eastbound lane.

Soon after Duvall went on-scene, Higgs, who had exited the vehicle, became pale and began vomiting and was unable to stand. Duvall said Higgs then became unresponsive and had no pulse and was not breathing. Duvall then performed life-saving CPR on Higgs, bringing the accident victim back to life. He was transported by EMS to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center.

When told he had saved the man’s life, Duvall said, “The man upstairs did that. I was just there.”

In addition to Duvall, Norder and EMS, Clarkson Police Officer Dylan Bohn and the Clarkson Fire Department worked the accident scene.
