On Wednesday, a student at Frederick Douglass High School in Lexington entered the school with a firearm in a backpack.

The student arrived at the school after classes began and was wanded with a handheld metal detector, according to media reports. His backpack was also searched.  The school’s security ambassador, though, failed to find the gun. Later in the day, the student was disciplined and during that process the firearm was discovered.

School officials said the gun was “well-concealed” inside the backpack.

“We have determined that the student was able to bring the weapon on campus because the contracted security ambassador responsible for searching the student’s backpack did not adhere to the protocol in place,” a Fayette County Public Schools spokesperson said.

The security ambassador was fired.

The high school had walk-through metal detectors installed in May, but security personnel must physically search backpacks because of the metal already present on them.
