A Leitchfield man has died in a two-vehicle accident on the South Main Street Western Kentucky Parkway overpass.

Thursday afternoon at 5:00, the Leitchfield Police and Fire Departments responded to the accident involving a Chevrolet S10 pickup truck and Buick Verano.

Witnesses at the scene told police that the northbound Chevy, being driven by 55-year-old Charles Henry Spalding Jr., swerved directly into the path of the southbound Buick, which was preparing to make a left turn onto the eastbound parkway on-ramp. The two vehicles struck nearly head-on, with the truck then striking the wall of the overpass.

Spalding was pronounced dead at the scene by the Grayson County Coroner’s Office. The occupants of the Buick were not injured.

Authorities are not certain why Spalding, who was not wearing a seat belt, turned into the path of the Buick, but the bridge was covered in a sheet of ice, and it’s also possible Spalding suffered a medical emergency as he was driving.

Grayson County Coroner Joe Brad Hudson said he will continue to investigate the accident in hopes of determining why the truck crossed the center line. Hudson said blunt force trauma was the cause of death. He is awaiting the results of toxicology tests.
