Glasgow gets best of Cougars in final scrimmage game

The Cougar basketball team went on the road on Saturday to Owensboro’s Sports Center to play its final scrimmage match before the start of the regular season next week.

Grayson County played five full quarters against Glasgow, winning two periods, losing two and tying the other. While total score was not kept officially, the Scotties came out on the winning end of the scrimmage 59-53.

Newcomer Q’Daryius McHenry hit a pair of three-pointers in the first period and the Cougars held on to win the quarter 12-11. McHenry went on to lead the Cougars with 13 points.

The Cougars led 5-4 in the second period following a lay-in by Miles Hornbeck at the 5:04 mark, but Glasgow hit back-to-back three-pointers to take a lead they would not give back. The Scotties won the second period 16-12.

Grayson County could manage just six points in the third quarter and lost it 13-6 and trailed by 10, 40-30 in the total points.

The Cougars held a four-point lead, 10-6 with less than a minute to play in the fourth quarter, but gave up the last four points and the Scotties were able to tie the score, 10-10.

Grayson County trailed in the early going of the final period before a Wyatt Schultz three-pointer put the Cougars in front, 7-6 at the 4:37 mark. The Scotties hit 1-0f-2 at the line to tie it 7-7 with 4:15 left, but the Cougars outscored Glasgow 6-2 the rest of the period to win the final quarter 13-9.

Glasgow’s Robert Kingery led all scorers with 14 points. Nolan Shartzer joined McHenry in double figures, scoring 11 points and he also led the team on the glass with seven rebounds.

Spencer Sharp scored nine points, grabbed three rebounds, dealt three assists and had two steals. Senior Josh Embry scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds. Schultz also finished with eight points.

Hornbeck and Brian Payton both finished with two points to complete the Cougars scoring.
