The search for a Monroe County teenager whose vehicle was swept off a bridge and into a creek has entered its fifth day.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said that Monday night at approximately 7:00, 19-year-old Leah Carter, of Gamaliel, called 911 and said she attempted to cross a flooded bridge on Lyons Road, in Monroe County, when her vehicle stalled and was being swept away by floodwaters into East Fork Creek.
An extensive search effort began immediately, with multiple law enforcement agencies, emergency personnel and volunteers searching from the air, land and water, according to the sheriff’s office.
Carter’s vehicle was found at about 5:30 Tuesday morning approximately 500 yards from where the vehicle entered the creek.
Monroe County Emergency Management is leading the search and rescue efforts and is being assisted by fire departments from Gamaliel, Summer Shade, Campbellsville, Taylor County, and Barren County.
The investigation is being led by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Tompkinsville Police Department and Kentucky State Police.
