Masden’s last second three-point play gives Lady Cougars a 53-52 win over Owensboro

Down by two points as time was expiring, Kaylee Masden rebounded a missed three-point shot and put it back in the basket to tie the game at 52-52 with 1.7 seconds showing on the clock at Owensboro Senior High on Tuesday. Masden was fouled on the play and her made free throw gave the Lady Cougars a one-point victory.

The Lady Cougars led for most of this game, by as many as 11 points at one time, but a big third quarter by the Lady Devils brought them back into the game. Mya Greer hit 1-of-2 free throws with 8.5 seconds left in the game to give the Lady Devils a two point lead to set up Masden’s heroics.

The Lady Cougars built a seven-point lead, 12-5 at the 3:08 mark of the opening period, but the Lady Devils responded with seven straight to tie the game 12-12 with 1:40 left. Bailey Snyder then buried a three-pointer with five seconds left in the period to give the Lady Cougars a 15-12 lead heading into the second period.

An 11-4 Lady Cougar run saw them take a 10-point lead, 26-16 with 2:30 left in the first half. A Masden three-pointer with 21 seconds left saw the Lady Cougars holding their largest lead of the game, 11 points at 31-20, but Amaya Curry beat the buzzer with a lay-in to make it a nine-point advantage, 31-22 at the half.

Owensboro’s Mykael Winstead scored all 11 of her points in the third period and the Lady Devils outscored the Lady Cougars 17-9 in the period to pull to within a point of the lead, 40-39 at the start of the fourth quarter.

A rebound basket by Lyric Lawrence at the 6:40 mark gave the Lady Devils their first lead since it was 3-1. The Lady Devils then built the lead to five points, 49-44 with 3:11 left to play.

The Lady Cougars responded with a 6-2 run to pull to within a point, 51-50 with 1:04 left to set up the final 8.5 seconds.

Curry led the Lady Devils with 13 points, while Winstead had 11 and Nia Gonzo finished with 10.

Kenzie Renfrow led the Lady Cougars with 16 points and she added three assists and three steals. Rachael Snyder scored 15 points and she added five rebounds. Laura Vincent was the third Lady Cougar to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points and leading the team on the boards with six rebounds.

Masden and Bailey Snyder both finished with six points to complete the scoring.
