The Caneyville man shot in late November as he chased burglars off his property has been killed in a shooting in Rosine.

Johnnie Hayes, 59, was shot and killed Wednesday night just after 5:00. He was found deceased in a car at 33 Bluff Street by the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office. He had suffered a gunshot wound.

Hayes’ body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Madisonville for autopsy.

The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office questioned a “suspect” in the case, 30-year-old Adam Lacefield, of Caneyville, and arrested him on a failure to appear warrant, according to Ohio County Sheriff Tracy Beatty. He is being held in the Ohio County Detention Center. He has not yet been charged with Hayes’ murder.

In early 2018, Lacefield was arrested on multiple felony charges in Ohio County after being accused of kidnapping and robbing Ohio County resident Noreen McCormick, the mother of Lacefield’s then 24-year-old girlfriend, Samantha McCormick, who was charged in the case.

In October 2017, Lacefield and another man were arrested in Leitchfield after he and another man stole a jet ski and trailer from a residence on Blowtown Road.

Hayes and 39-year-old Wanda Ferguson, who lived with Hayes on his property in the 2500 block of Richland Road, were shot multiple times on the morning of November 21 as the couple followed two burglars off Hayes’ property in a vehicle. Hayes and Ferguson followed the two men, who were traveling in separate vehicles, on Richland Road until at least one of the burglars opened fired, striking Hayes and Ferguson and causing their vehicle to leave the road.

The two suspects have yet to be arrested.

Then, on December 2, Hayes found an explosive device in a barn on his property. The Kentucky State Police Bomb Squad was dispatched to the scene. The device was a large bucket with gun powder and other objects inside and was detonated by KSP. No suspect has been arrested in the case.
