Playing host to the Central Hardin Bruins, the Cougar softball team was run-ruled Tuesday afternoon, 14-1.

It was a totally forgettable effort on the half of the Cougars as they committed seven errors which led to eight unearned runs.

At the plate, the Cougars could produce just two hits against sophomore hurler Kelsey Waters. This was the second straight game opening the season in which the Cougars produced just two hits.

The Cougars committed four errors in the first inning which led to three Bruin runs.

Grayson County got one of those runs back in the second inning. Catcher Bailey Snyder beat out an infield hit, then moved to second on a ground out by pitcher Embry Thorpe.

Maddie Duvall followed by grounding a ball to shortstop Madyson Jones. When Snyder took a wide turn around second base, Jones got Snyder into a rundown between second and third. Snyder took off for third and was safe when Jones’ throw was wild at third base, and Duvall motored into second base.

With two outs, third-baseman Lindsay O’Neal singled up the middle to plate Snyder, but center-fielder Peyton Beger threw out Duvall at the plate to end the inning. That was it for the Cougars.

The Bruins added two more runs in the third to make it 5-1. A two run home run by Beger and a run-scoring double by first-baseman Emma Case produced three more runs in the fourth inning to make it 8-1.

The Bruins then made it a run-rule situation by pounding out five hits in the fifth inning that produced six runs to make it 14-1. When the Cougars then went out in order in the bottom of the inning, the Bruins had the win.

Things do not get easier for the Cougars (0-2) as they travel to Warren East for a game on Thursday. The Raiders were the runners-up at the state tournament last season.
