Lady Cougars split two summer basketball games at Larue County

On Thursday, the first day of summer play at Larue County, the Lady Cougar basketball team split two games, losing to Green County 27-15, then beating host Larue County 31-12. The JV girls also beat Larue County by a score of 25-11.

GREEN COUNTY

Turnovers and missed shots were the order of the day for the Lady Cougars in their first action of the summer.

Grayson County turned the ball over 10 times in the first half and 16 times throughout the game. They were ice cold from the floor, hitting just 5 of 30 shots, 16.6 percent.

A foul shot by Ella Robinson at the 2:55 mark of the first half gave the Lady Cougars their only lead of the day, 8-7. Green County closed out the half by scoring the last seven points to lead by six, 14-8 at the half.

A lay-up by Kenzie Renfrow at the 16:44 mark and a rebound basket by Robinson at the 11:39 mark brought the Lady Cougars to within two points of the lead at 14-12. The Lady Dragons then hit four straight three-pointers in a 12-1 run that put them in command 26-13 with 7:59 left to play and they held on down the stretch.

Renfrow led the Lady Cougars with six points and she added three rebounds, an assist and two steals. Robinson finished with three points and three rebounds.

Aryssa Riggs, an incoming freshman transferred in from Hart County, scored two points, as did Rachael Snyder. Bailey Snyder and Gracie Franklin both had one point to round out the Lady Cougar scoring.

LARUE COUNTY

With the score tied 2-2 at the 15:37 mark, the Lady Cougars reeled off 12 unanswered points to take control of the game 14-2 at the 8:46 mark. They then outscored the Lady Hawks 6-2 to lead by 16 points, 20-4 at the half.

Grayson County opened the second half by scoring the first five points to take their largest lead of the game, 21 points at 25-4 with 13:35 left to play. The Lady Hawks outscored the Lady Cougars 8-6 the rest of the way but the outcome was decided.

Senior Laura Vincent was not available for the first game against Green County, but made her first appearance of the summer against Larue and had a double-double day, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Renfrow and Bailey Snyder both finished with six points and Renfrow added three rebounds, three assists and three steals to her totals.

Rachael Snyder added four points, while Robinson and Brianna Dennis closed out the scoring with two points each.

JV VS LARUE COUNTY

Less than three and a half minutes into the game, Brianna Dennis went down in a heap, clutching her left knee, which was encased in a heavy brace.

She came out of the game, but went back in before the first half was concluded and had a fine game in the Lady Cougars’ win, with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Grayson County led by just two points, 6-4 at the half, but outscored the Lady Hawks 19-7 in the second half to run away with the game.

Gracie Franklin scored six points, while Annie Kiper and Briley Renfrow both scored three. Riggs finished with two points and Raigan Cave had one to complete the scoring.
