A suspect has been arrested after allegedly shooting into a residence, setting a fire to a residence and shooting at Kentucky State Troopers and deputies.

On Monday morning at approximately 12:15, state police responded to a call for assistance from the Bell County Sheriff’s Office in reference to a shots fired complaint near Billy Goat Road, in the Cary community of Bell County.

Upon troopers and deputies arriving on the scene, authorities discovered 53-year-old Charles E. Lawson, of Pineville, had allegedly shot into a nearby residence and started a structure fire at or near his residence, according to state police.

State police said that shortly after law enforcement arrived, Lawson fired shots at troopers and deputies, resulting in the KSP Special Response Team (SRT) responding to the scene. After a standoff that lasted several hours, the SRT approached the residence and made contact with and arrested Lawson, police said.

He was lodged in the Bell County Detention Center where he’s been charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, attempted murder of a police officer and first-degree assault of a police officer.

He was lodged in the Bell County Detention Center on a $500,000 cash bond.
