The Lady Cougar volleyball team picked up an important, 3rd District win Thursday in the Cougar Den, 3-1 over visiting Edmonson County.

The Lady Cougars got off to a slow start against the LadyCats, falling behind by as many as eight points, at 11-19, before finally turning things around and making a run.

Grayson County pulled to within two points of the lead, 21-23 following a Kenzie Skaggs kill, but a service error gave the ball back to the LadyCats and a Grayson County hitting error gave them the first-set win, 25-21.

Things did not get better for the Lady Cougars in the second set as they again fell behind by eight points, 7-15. They still trailed by six points, 14-20, when sophomore Chloe Cox took the serve and served four points, including an ace to pull Grayson County to within two points, 18-20.

The Lady Cougars still trailed by three, 19-22, when sophomore Katie Skaggs took the serve and served out for an improbable Lady Cougar win. Kenzie Skaggs had a kill during the run and Katie Skaggs served two aces, including one at set-point to even the match at a set apiece.

Grayson County never trailed in the third set. Tied at 13-13, junior Bailey Richardson took the serve and nearly served out. Junior Chloe Cox had three kills, and junior Ella Robinson had two, and Richardson served a pair of aces in an 11-0 run that took it to set-point at 24-13 before a hitting error gave the ball back to Edmonson County.

The LadyCats’ Kaylee Lindsey served an ace to make it 24-15, but then put a serve long to give the Lady Cougars the third-set win, 25-15.

It appeared as though the Lady Cougars were going to run away with the fourth set as they built a 15-point, 21-6 lead. A kill by Alyssa Doyle gave the serve back to the LadyCats and libero Abbie Slaughter followed by serving eight straight points, including two aces to pull her team to within six points of the lead at 21-15.

A Robinson kill took it to match-point at 24-15, but a hitting error gave the ball back to the LadyCats at 24-16. A Rachel Cowles block and a Lady Cougar hitting error made it 24-18, but Cox put away a kill to give Grayson County the match, 25-18.

Robinson led the team with 13 kills while Cox and Kenzie Skaggs had 12 each. Alexis Hart led the team with 35 assists. Richardson led the team with 14 digs, while Kenzie Willoughby and Gracie VanMetre had 10 apiece. Cox and Katie Skaggs led the team with four aces each.
