The Lady Cougar volleyball team got a big, 12th District win Thursday as they defeated the visiting Whitesville Trinity Raiders 3-1 in the Cougar Den. The JV squad also picked up a straight-set win, 21-18, 21-10.

The Lady Cougars had to overcome an early deficit as the Lady Raiders’ Hannah Nash served three straight aces in a 4-0 run at the start.

The Lady Cougars still trailed by two, 6-8, when senior Maddie Duvall took the serve. Junior Kenzie Skaggs had a kill before Duvall served three straight aces to give the Lady Cougars a 9-8 lead.

Leading 10-9, senior setter Alexis Hart served an ace, and two straight hitting and passing errors by Trinity gave the Lady Cougars a four-point lead, 13-9.

An ace by Skaggs and a kill by junior Ella Robinson increased the lead to six points, 16-10. An ace from junior Bailey Richardson and a kill by senior Chloe Cox  pushed the lead to seven points, 18-11.

With set-point at 24-17, a Trinity hitting error gave the Lady Cougars the first-set win, 25-17.

Skaggs served five aces in a 7-0 Lady Cougar run to start the second set. They increased the lead to as many as twelve points, 19-7 before the Lady Raiders began to eat into the lead. With Trinity serving at set-point, 24-18, Skaggs put away a kill to give the second set to Grayson County, 25-18.

Grayson County led just once in the third set, 11-10 following a Robinson kill, before Trinity pushed their lead back up to five points at 13-18. Leading by three, 18-22, Nash served out for the win at 18-25.

The Lady Raiders led by as many as five points in the early going of the fourth set, 3-8, before the Lady Cougars came back to go in front 11-10. The two teams stayed within one or two points of one another until Skaggs took the serve with the Lady Cougars trailing by two, 18-20.

Skaggs served a pair of aces in a 5-0 Lady Cougar run that made it 23-20. Robinson then sent it to match point with a kill before Cassidy Morris had a kill for Trinity to give them back the serve. But a Robinson kill on the next volley gave the match to the Lady Cougars, 25-21.

With the win, the Lady Cougars move to 4-2 on the season. They will be on the road on Monday when they travel to Frederick Fraize, in Cloverport. That match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
