The Cougar football team put on a dominating performance last Friday evening in a 49-0 whitewash of visiting Nelson County at Cougar Field.

It was a dominating performance on both sides of the ball. The Cougar defense held the Cardinals without a first down in the first half of play. In six first-half possessions, the Cardinals lost 17 total yards. They did not gain a first down until the 4:04 mark of the third quarter when the Cougars had their JV defense on the field.

On offense, the Cougars ran the ball 33 times for 218 yards and five touchdowns, and threw the ball three times for 51 yards and one score. The other TD came on a 75-yard kickoff return by Logan Kopp at the start of the second half. Hunter Gibson carried the ball 10 times for 122 yards and he scored three times. Grayson County had the ball six times in the first half and scored on five of those possessions.

The Cougars got a break on the opening kickoff when the Cardinals fumbled the ball at their own 33-yard line. Seven plays later, Gibson dove into the right corner of the end zone for the first score of the game. Logan Raymer added the extra point to make it 7-0 at the 7:59 mark.

The Cougars moved 50 yards in four plays on their next possession to score at the 4:09 mark. They used a trick play at the 35-yard line when Gibson threw a halfback pass to Hunter Tomes for the score that made it 14-0.

On their next possession, the Cougars moved 29 yards in 10 plays to score with 10:27 remaining in the second period. Gibson carried in from the three and Raymer added the kick to make it 21-0.

The Cougars were forced to punt on their next possession, but the defense forced a three-and-out and Caden Woodcock returned a Cardinal punt from the Cardinal 30 to the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Mason Miller carried in from the one to make it 28-0.

Grayson County then moved 44 yards in three plays, with Gibson carrying in from the 18, and with 1:12 left in the first half, they led 35-0.

On the opening kickoff of the second half, Kopp took the kick at the 25, moved left across the field, then broke into the clear, carrying 75 yards into the end zone to make it 42-0. The rest of the second half was played with a running clock.

The Cougars had one more score on the night. They moved 40 yards in six plays with Jacob Kerr taking it in from the one to make the final score 49-0.

The Cougars will be at home this Friday evening to take on the rival Edmonson County Wildcats in the annual battle for the coveted Tobacco Stick. Game time in set at Cougar Field for 7 p.m.
