The Lady Cougar soccer team traveled to Breckinridge County on Labor Day and came home with a 3-1 win.

For much of the first half, the two teams played the game in the midfield, with neither team putting on a serious goal threat. But in the 32nd minute, Lady Cougar sophomore Ellie Evans was fouled just a few yards outside the penalty area, directly in front of the Tiger goal.

Evans set up to take the free kick and placed it over the Tiger wall and onto the Tiger goal. Tiger goal keeper Abby Shannon got her hands on the ball, but could not hold it and it fell into the goal to give the Lady Cougars a 1-0 lead, which is the way it stayed at the half.

Five minutes into the first half, sophomore Malorie Zurmehly was fouled as she entered the penalty area, and the official awarded the Lady Cougars a penalty kick. Junior Gillian Johnston set up to take the PK and put it past Shannon to make it 2-0.

Two minutes later, the Tigers’ Aubrey Tabor got through the Cougar defense and put a shot past Lady Cougar goalie Laura Vincent to make it 2-1.

The score stayed that way until there were seven minutes left to play. The Tigers had a goal kick, and Shannon’s kick was taken in by Johnston about 25 yards in front of the Tiger goal. Johnston dribbled in and took the shot from about 15 yards out and put it into the net to make it 3-1, which is how the game ended.
