Lady Cougars beat LadyCats; clinch top seed in District Tourney

The Lady Cougars defeated the Edmonson County LadyCats 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19) Thursday in Brownsville and in doing so clinched the top seed in next month’s 12th District Volleyball Tournament. The JV squad also won, 2-1 (21-17, 14-21, 21-19).

Juniors Ella Robinson and Chloe Cox led the Lady Cougars offense, Robinson with 17 kills and Cox right behind with 15. Senior Alexis Hart had 34 assists to lead the team, and junior Bailey Richardson led the team in digs with 18. Hart added 14 digs and Robinson 13. Cox also led the team in service aces with eight.

The Lady Cougars led throughout much of the first set, but fell behind 13-14 following two aces by the LadyCats’ freshman, Kaylee Lindsey. Cox then served three straight points to put the Lady Cougars back on top 17-14.

Edmonson managed to tie the score one last time at 21-21, but leading 22-21, Hart served out for the win. Cox had back-to-back kills to close out the set.

LadyCat senior Halle Estes had three aces in a 5-0 run that gave her team a 10-5 lead in the sec0ond set. The Lady Cats led by as many as seven points, 16-9 before the Lady Cougars began to come back. Cox had a pair of aces in an 5-0 Lady Cougar run that saw them take a 21-19 lead.

With the score tied at 23-23, freshman Alyssa Doyle’s kill gave the LadyCats a set point when the Lady Cougars were whistled for a double hit to tie the match at a set apiece.

Leading by four in the second set, 9-5, Robinson served four straight points to extend the lead to eight, 13-5. They still led by six, 15-9, when Hart served three straight points to increase the lead to nine points, 18-9. An Edmonson County service error on set point gave the Lady Cougars the set at 25-18.

The Lady Cougars never trailed in the fourth set after taking an early 6-1 lead. The LadyCats pulled to within two points of the lead at 12-10, but would never get closer. With the Lady Cats serving at match point, a hitting error gave the Lady Cougars the win.
