The Leitchfield Fire Department battled a man-made blaze on Wednesday afternoon and into the evening after an illegal burn pile was left unattended.

Wednesday afternoon at approximately 5:00, the Leitchfield Fire Department responded to the 1000 block of Thomason Cemetery Road on the report of a fire in a heavily wooded area near Rough River Lake. The fire began as a burn pile, according to Chief Tim Duvall, but quickly spread after the man who started the fire left the area.

Firefighters battled the blaze for about 90 minutes as it spread through a densely wooded area located on a hillside, moving from 1005 Thomason Cemetery Road to 1065 Thomason Cemetery Road. Duvall said dense underbrush and being on a slight hill contributed to the fire spreading quickly.

Duvall noted that the man who allegedly started the fire has not yet been located, but officials know his identity. Due to a Burn Ban in Grayson and most other Kentucky counties, he faces a fine of up to $500 as well as any punishment the Division of Forestry seeks to level against the suspect. The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 6:35. No injuries were reported.
