Middle school Lady Cougars split two with Butler County

The middle school Lady Cougar basketball teams were at home Thursday evening for two games against the Butler County Lady Bears and wound up winning one and losing the other.

In the opener, the 7th-grade Lady Cougars led by a point heading into the fourth quarter, but the Lady Bears took the game 25-22.

In the second game, the 8th-grade Lady Cougars got 14 points and nine rebounds from Cora McMillan as they won for the first time this season 45-21.

SEVENTH-GRADE GAME

In a low-scoring first period, the Lady Cougars trailed by a point, 6-5 heading into the second quarter. The scoring didn’t pick up in the second period, but the Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Bears 5-4, which added up to a tie game at the half, 10-10.

Grayson County’s Lily Kate Hill scored on a lay-in with 51 seconds left in the third quarter that gave the Lady Cougars a one-point lead, 16-15, which they took into the final period of play.

The Lady Bears then opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run that gave them a lead they would not give back.

Grayson County twice pulled to within three of the lead but could not get closer.

Butler County’s Bailey Moore led all scorers in the game with 14 points.

Gracie Escue led the Lady Cougars with seven points, while Hill had six. Haley Beadle had three points, while three players, Isabel Blanton, Shawni Poole and Haley Miller closed out the scoring with two points each. The Lady Cougars drop to 3-5 on the season.

EIGHTH-GRADE GAME

The Lady Cougars never trailed after McMillan scored the first six points of the game. They led 11-0 after the first period of play and led by 13 points, 18-5 at the half.

After the Lady Bears opened the third period with a basket, Grayson County put together an 8-2 run, with McMillan scoring all eight points, to lead 26-9 with 3:16 left in the period. The Lady Cougars led by 21 points, 32-11 heading into the fourth quarter, then expanded their lead to 24 points at the end of the fourth.

Sydney Perkins finished with seven points, while three players, Coray Milam, Kaylee Hodges, and Emily Green had five each. Allie Jennings and Hannah Franklin each finished with three points, while Gracie Escue and Sutten VanMeter had two apiece to complete the scoring.
