Red Devils batter Cougars 51-9

The Owensboro Red Devils put a 51-9 hurt on the Grayson County Cougars last Friday night in Owensboro.

The Red Devils quarterback Gavin Wimsatt threw the ball 17 times, completing nine for 236 yards and three scores. The Red Devils also rushed for 117 yards and three mores scores, and added a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Red Devils also scored on a safety in the first period.

Cougar quarterback Logan Kopp threw 10 times, completing four for 36 yards. The Cougars rushed the ball 31 times, gaining 57 yards and one score. Hunter Gibson was the leading ball-carrier for the Cougars, running 10 times for 36 yards and one score.

The Red Devils scored four times in the first period to lead 23-0 at the end of the period. Steven Stevenson scored on a 49-yard pass play from Wimsatt  to open the scoring at the 10:21 mark. Javius Taylor ran it in from three yards out at the 5:41 mark to make it 14-0.

Jaiden Greathouse tackled Kopp in the end zone to make it 16-0 at the 4:00 mark, and Taylor scored again at the 1:27 mark on a 10-yard run to make it 23-0.

The Cougars got on the board at the 7:25 mark of the second period on a 29-yard field goal by Logan Raymer. Dylan Zabel set up the Cougars at the Red Devil 14 following an interception of Wimsatt at the 15.

But on the ensuing kickoff, Taylor returned the ball 90 yards for another Red Devil touchdown to make it 30-3.

The Red Devils added two more touchdowns in the second period. Wimsatt hooked up with Tyren Hayden on a 23-yard pass-play for a score, then threw 78 yards to Treyvon Tinsley for another score that made it 44-3 at the half and set up a running clock in the second half.

With the Red Devils inserting its JV squad into the game, neither team scored in the third quarter.

Grayson County put together a 61-yard drive in the fourth quarter for their only touchdown of the night. Gibson scored from a yard out to make it 44-9 after the extra-point try was blocked.

The Red Devils’ Eli Early then had a 36-yard kickoff return that set them up at the Cougar 39-yard line. Owensboro then moved in for the final score of the night on a 13-yard run by Taquan Robinson with 1:30 left.

The Cougars (6-3) will end their regular season on the road next Friday at Hart County (3-6). That game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The Cougars finish 2-3 in District play and will enter the playoffs as the three-seed, meaning they will travel to Graves County for a game in Mayfield on Nov. 8.
