Middle school Lady Cougars take down LadyCats twice

The middle school Lady Cougar basketball teams earned a pair of wins Thursday night in Brownsville over the Edmonson County LadyCats.

In the opener, the 7th grade girls overcame a 10-point, second quarter deficit on their way to a 25-21 victory.

The eighth-graders got a game-high 17 points from Sydney Perkins and a double-double performance from Cora McMillan as they took down the LadyCats 42-26.

SEVENTH-GRADE GAME

The Lady Cougars got off to a slow start and trailed Edmonson County 9-3 at the end of the first quarter. When the LadyCats scored the first four points of the second period, the Lady Cougars trailed by 10 points, 13-3 with 5:17 left in the half.

But that’s when the Lady Cougars woke up and got their game in order. Shawni Poole had back-to-back rebound baskets before Alexis Thompson hit one-of-two at the free throw line. Sutten VanMeter then completed an 8-0 run by burying a three-pointer with 1:38 left and the Lady Cougars had cut their deficit to just two points at the half.

When VanMeter opened the third quarter with another three, the Lady Cougars had scored 11 in a row and led for the first time, 14-13.

The two teams exchanged the lead three times before a lay-in by Gracie Escue with 2:28 left in the period gave Grayson County a lead it would not give back at 18-16.. The Lady Cougars led by one, 18-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

A three-pointer by Isabel Blanton at the 5:01 mark gave the Lady Cougars their largest lead of the night, four points at 23-19, and they were able to hold off the LadyCats the rest of the way.

Escue and Blanton led the scoring for the Lady Cougars with six points apiece. VanMeter had five points while Poole finished with four. Presley Jackson added three points and Thompson closed out the scoring with one.

EIGHTH-GRADE GAME

The Lady Cougars never trailed in this game after racing out to an 8-1 lead with 1:20 left in the first period. They led 14-2 at the start of the second quarter.

When Perkins hit two free throws with 2:09 left in the period, the Lady Cougars held their largest lead of the first half, 15 points at 21-6. They led by 12, 22-10 at the half.

When Perkins closed out the third quarter with a three-pointer with 16.4 seconds left and added two free throws with 8.7 second remaining, the Lady Cougars led by 19 points, 37-18.

Perkins then opened the fourth quarter with a lay-in and Grayson County held its largest lead of the night, 21 points at 39-18. The LadyCats outscored the Lady Cougars the rest of the way 8-3, but the game was over.

In addition to her game-high 17 points, Perkins also pulled down seven rebounds. McMillan made it a double-double night with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Coray Milam scored six points, and Hannah Franklin added five. Addie Bratcher scored two points, while Allie Jennings closed out the scoring with one.
