In the calendar year of 2019, Grayson County and Edmonson County met three times. Jaxon Higdon had a game-winning shot in early February and the Cougars completed an 18-point comeback in the fourth quarter to win the 12th District championship later that month. On Friday night, the fireworks went off against as senior Nolan Shartzer hit a fadeaway jump shot as time expired to give the Cougars a 50-48 win over the Wildcats.

Shartzer finished with 24 points and pulled down 5 rebounds in the win, but it was Keegan Sharp who lit up the scorebook with 21 points, all of which came from three. The sophomore shot an unbelievable 7 of 10 from three to help lead the Cougars to the win.

Like most games between the two rivals, it was a back and forth affair for most of the contest. Neither team was able to pull away, but Edmonson County did hold a 25-20 lead at halftime.

Shartzer and Sharp scored all but two of the Cougars’ points in the second half as the two combined for 28.

In the closing moments of the game, Grayson County did have a five-point lead, but two three-pointers, one by Gavin Rose and another by Nick Clemmons, tied the game up at 48 with 14.2 seconds left.

Cougar head coach Travis Johnston called a timeout and deja vu set in for fans on both sides. The senior Shartzer started with the ball at the top of the key before driving to the right block with 5 seconds remaining. After initially being triple-teamed and nearly losing the ball, Shartzer regained control and made a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer to give the Cougars the 2-point win.

The win helped improve Grayson County to 3-2 on the young season. They will travel to Elizabethtown High School on Tuesday evening for a game against one of the top teams in the 5th Region. Our coverage will begin on K105 at 6:40 pm CST.
