Scoreless second period leads to 61-43 Lady Cougar loss at Apollo

After an exciting, end-to-end battle in the first period Monday evening at Apollo, the Lady Cougars went stone cold in the second period and put up a goose egg on the scoreboard in the, allowing the homestanding E-Gals to run off 16 unanswered points on their way to a 61-43 win over the Lady Cougars.

In an interview on K105 following the game, head coach Ted Hill said he had never had a team go scoreless in a period before. The Lady Cougars were 0-for-16 in the period.

The E-Gals scored the final basket of the first period to tie the score at 20-20. They then scored 12 straight points in the second period. When they opened the third period with a basket, they had scored 16 unanswered points and led 34-20 at the 7:32 mark.

Apollo led by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, but the Lady Cougars closed out the period with a 7-0 run that cut their deficit to eight points, 43-35 at the start of the fourth quarter.

They would get no closer. A lay-in by Apollo’s Amber Dunn at the 3:23 mark capped a 14-6 run that pushed the lead back up to 16 points, 57-41 and the E-Gals cruised home for the win.

Dunn led the E-Gals with 19 points. Kassidy Daugherty had 15 points, Zoe Floyd scored 12, and Amaya Curry added 11.

Kenzie Renfrow led the Lady Cougars with 25 points and she added six rebounds, four assists and a steal. Senior Bailey Snyder scored eight points, while Rachael Snyder had six points and six rebounds. Annie Kiper and Ella Robinson closed out the scoring with two points each, and Robinson led the team on the glass with eight rebounds.
