The Kentucky House Transportation Committee passed a bill Tuesday to help increase safety as children get on and off school buses.

The measure, filed by GOP Rep. Robert Goforth, of East Bernstadt, would require the installation of cameras on school bus stop-arms. In filing the bill, Goforth said drivers ignoring the stop-arms is an issue throughout Kentucky.

“We owe it to our children to make sure we provide a safe environment while they are getting on and off the school bus and possibly save some lives,” Goforth said. In an interview with WKYT, Goforth said the stop-arm cameras would catch the license plate numbers of vehicles that illegally pass school buses.

A first offense would be a $300 fine, a second offense within three months would be a $500 fine.

If passed, the measure would require all school buses to have the stop-arm cameras installed by 2023.

House Bill 34 now goes to the full House for its consideration.
