Restaurant inspection results troubling for several establishments

The Grayson County Health Center has released its restaurant/food inspection results for the month of January.

Several establishments earned good scores in January’s inspections, including Papa John’s and Wendy’s with 96s and Mr. Gatti’s with a 98. JaJa’s Cupcake Bakery & Catering recorded a 100, the only perfect score of the month.

There were many restaurants that struggled mightily, though, including Redneck Ranch Restaurant, which scored an alarmingly low 74, and had well over 40 violations. Huddle House, with over 20 violations and an initial score of 84, had to have two follow-up inspections performed to raise its score to 92. The second lowest score of the month belonged to Sandy’s Restaurant, which had an initial score of 82 and over 20 violations.

In total, eight establishments scored poorly enough to warrant follow-up inspections.

Subway: Food score 93 – Violations: Equipment stored in hand sink and not properly maintained (corrected), food product not properly thawed, top of warmers unclean, inside ice machine unclean, fan grilles in walk-in cooler/freezer in poor repair, ice build-up in freezer, floors in cooler unclean, seal on back door in poor repair. Follow-up score 96.

Papa John’s Pizza: Food score 96 – Violations: Food product not properly labeled with time as a control (corrected), containers in prep area broken, can opener holder unclean, knife in poor repair, gaskets unclean and in poor repair, screens on walls unclean, keyboards unclean, top of pizza oven unclean, storage containers unclean, inside small cooler unclean. Follow-up score 98.

Take Me Home: Food score 87 – Violations: No hand towels or towels not properly dispensed at hand sinks, sanitizer buckets too strong (corrected), cook procedures not properly maintained (food labels), food items not properly date marked or expired (corrected), chemical storage in restrooms improper (corrected), single service items improperly stored, clean dishes drying on clean cloth material, tracks on cooler under slicer unclean, inside microwave unclean, spray nozzle on three compartment sink in poor repair (corrected). Follow-up score 94.

Take Me Home (follow-up inspection): Food score 96 – Violations: Single service items improperly stored, clean dishes stored on clean cloth material, tracks on cooler unclean, slicer unclean, inside microwave unclean, spray nozzle on three compartment sink in poor repair.

The rating score of the establishment is determined by subtracting weighted point values of noted violations from 100, according to officials. Unannounced inspections observe the overall operation, including food source and protection; personnel; food equipment and utensils; maintenance of water and sewage systems; garbage and refuse disposal; insect, rodent and animal control; and storage of toxic items, among others.

Critical violations, four and five points in weight, are items, which if uncorrected, carry the potential to be an imminent threat to the public’s health. These items must be corrected in a time designated by the health department not to exceed 10 days.
