After Gov. Andy Beshear declared a public health emergency on Friday night, late Sunday afternoon the governor made a statement on Facebook Live (video below), saying that four people in Kentucky have now been diagnosed with coronavirus.

The first case diagnosed was a woman from Harrison County, in northern Kentucky. She was diagnosed late last week and is being treated at Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington. The three cases identified since then are from Fayette and Jefferson counties, along with another person from Harrison County.

(Harrison County Schools officials announced over the weekend that students will do schoolwork at home this week as the county’s schools are deep cleaned.)

Beshear said the patients are in isolation.

“We have been preparing with every minute that we have had to make sure that we can respond and respond appropriately,” Beshear said in his statement. “We will get through this. We’ll do it together, we’re doing it by caring about each other, by practicing good hygiene. Folks, we are going to make it through this.”

Health officials remind people to wash your hands more often than usual and for a longer period of time. People who feel sick should not go to work or school.

Beshear declaring a public health emergency allows federal funds and resources to be used as state officials handle the illness.
