The Cougar baseball team opened its season last Saturday with a scrimmage game at Don Lee Field against the Franklin-Simpson Wildcats and suffered a 3-1 loss in eight innings.

Both teams used five pitchers with no pitcher going more than two innings. The Cougars managed just three hits against the five Franklin-Simpson pitchers and the only run they scored came in the third inning without a hit.

The Wildcats managed six hits on the day, including three hits in the seventh inning when they scored all three of their runs.

Caine Smith started for the Cougars and retired all six batters he faced, including four strikeouts. Dain Hawkins followed, giving up one hit and walking one in two scoreless innings.

Alex Scott went the next two innings, giving up a leadoff double in the fifth before retiring the next three batters to retire the side. He walked the leadoff batter in the sixth, but again retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.

Mason Miller took to the hill in the seventh and was the victim of some shoddy fielding as the Wildcats scored their three runs. The Cougars committed three errors in the inning and only one of the runs was earned.

Jake Hawkins pitched the final inning giving up a leadoff single, but retiring the next three batters.

The Cougars scored their only run in the third inning. Scott walked leading off, stole second base, and moved to third on a ground out by Caden Woodcock. Scott them scored on a passed ball by catcher Taylor Lowhorn.

The Cougars managed just three hits on the day, two of them singles by Smith, and the other a single by Jacob Conder in the sixth inning.

The Cougars will open their regular season at home on Tuesday, March 17 against Ohio County.
