Despite Kentucky’s economy being reopened, thousands of people continue to file unemployment benefits claims.

New numbers released on Thursday show that more than 30,000 people filed for unemployment in the week ending June 27. That’s 5,600 more than the previous week.

Furthermore, the total claims from March 15 to the end of June totaled just over one million; the first time in Kentucky that jobless claims have numbered more than a million.

There are still several thousand people in the state waiting for the unemployment benefits claims to be processed, as Gov. Andy Beshear’s office recently said more than 50,000 unemployed workers are still waiting to have their claims filed.

Beshear announced Thursday that the state had hired a private accounting firm to help process the backlog of claims.
