Lady Cougars win 11th straight, 3-1 over Owensboro

The Lady Cougar volleyball team won its 11th straight match Monday evening in the Cougar Den, 3-1 (25-14, 25-27, 25-10, 25-21) over the visiting Owensboro Lady Devils.

Senior Ella Robinson led the way with 19 kills, and she added two blocks and nine digs. Senior libero, Bailey Richardson led the team with 24 digs, while senior setter Brieanna Boll led with 25 assists. Sophomore Lillie Payne led the Lady Cougars with three service aces.

The Lady Cougars led from start to finish in taking the first set. At set point, Payne put away a kill on an Owensboro overpass to take the opening set.

The Lady Cougars opened the second set by scoring the first six points. Payne had an ace, Robinson had a kill and senior Kenzie Skaggs had a block in the run.

The Lady Cougars still led by five points, 12-7, when Owensboro senior Krystal Pappas took the serve. Pappas ran off eight straight points, including four aces, to give the Lady Devils the lead, 15-12.

Owensboro still led by three, 17-14, when Payne took the serve and served four straight to put the Lady Cougars back on top, 18-17.

The two teams then battled to the end. Owensboro had the first set point at 24-22, but the Lady Cougars came back with a set point of their own at 25-24 before a service error gave the ball back to the Lady Devils. Two straight kills followed to tie the match at a set apiece.

Grayson County trailed once in the third set at 1-0. Payne then reeled off six unanswered points to put the Lady Cougars in charge 7-1, and they were never threatened afterward. Robinson had a kill at set point to give the Lady Cougars a 2-1 edge.

Grayson County raced out to a 10-2 lead at the start of the fourth set, but the Lady Devils started coming back at that point. The Lady Cougars still led by seven points, 10-3, when freshman Hannah Ashley took the serve and reeled off four straight to pull to within three before junior Allie Dotson had a block to stop the run.

Grayson County then began to slowly pull away. The Lady Devils staved off a match point at 24-16, giving the serve to Pappas. The Lady Devil senior then served four straight, including an ace to take it to 25-21 before Skaggs put away a cross-court kill to give the match to the Lady Cougars.
