A Leitchfield man has been seriously injured in a wreck on Shrewsbury Road.

Monday afternoon at approximately 5:40, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Leitchfield Fire Department and EMS responded to the 1800 block of Shrewsbury Road on the report of a single-vehicle accident.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found that Billy Downs, of Leitchfield, had been traveling south on Shrewsbury in a Ford F150 truck when he partially left the rain-soaked roadway in a straight stretch, traveling for about 50 yards with only two tires on the road.

Downs, somewhat miraculously, narrowly missed plunging about 15 feet into a water-filled culvert before striking an embankment/ditch, bringing the truck to a stop at the intersection of Nugent Road.

Downs, who was not wearing a seat belt, had to be helped out of the truck by firefighters and EMS workers, but not before firefighters stabilized the truck with a cable to keep the vehicle from falling farther into the ditch.

Suffering from what appeared to be a head injury, Downs was transported by EMS to Baptist Health Hardin (formerly Hardin Memorial Hospital), as medical helicopters declined to fly due to adverse weather conditions.

Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Jason Luedke and Erik Franklin, along with Lt. Sonny Poteet and Sgt. Fred Norder, worked the scene.
