A Grayson County Sheriff’s Office drunk driving arrest has led to the seizure of a stolen handgun.

Saturday afternoon at approximately 4:00, Grayson County Deputy Rick Mehlbauer was informed by Central Dispatch that a white van was traveling erratically near the 93 mile marker of the eastbound Western Kentucky Parkway.

Mehlbauer, who was already in the area, executed a traffic stop on the Ford E250 van near the 98 mile marker after observing the vehicle driving recklessly.

Upon making contact with the driver, 21-year-old James Snyder, of Upton, Mehlbauer suspected he was under the influence as Deputy Sean Fentress arrived on the scene to assist.

Mehlbauer performed a field sobriety test and arrested Snyder.

During a search of the van, the deputies located a .40 caliber handgun reported stolen out of Meade County. The van’s passenger, 47-year-old Shain B. Finley, of Big Clifty, said the gun was his, police said. The deputies additionally located marijuana, which Finley also claimed.

Snyder was charged with DUI, careless driving and having an open alcoholic container in a motor vehicle while Finley was charged with receiving stolen property (firearm) and possession of marijuana.

Both suspects were lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center but neither suspect is currently listed as an inmate.
