The Grayson County Cougars put three players into double figures Monday night in the Cougar Den on their way to a 56-50, 12th District win over visiting Edmonson County.

Sophomore River Blanton led the way for the Cougars with 14 points, and he added four rebounds. Juniors Keegan Sharp and Chandler McCrady each scored 13 points and both pulled down four rebounds.

A lay-in by Edmonson’s senior center Chaz Wilson with 2:24 left in the first period gave the Wildcats an 8-3 lead, but the Cougars scored the final five points of the period to tie the score at 8-8 heading into the second period.

The Cougars opened the second period with a 15-1 run to take their largest lead of the night, 14 points at 23-9, but Edmonson responded with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to five points, 23-18 with 1:07 left in the first half. A rebound basket by sophomore Dillon Horn with 35 seconds remaining gave the Cougars a seven-point lead, 25-18 at the half.

When the Cougars opened the third period with a 7-2 run, they led by 12  points, 32-20 at the 5:14 mark. They led by 10 points, 42-32 heading into the final period of play.

Edmonson County used a 7-0 run to cut the lead to five points, 47-42 with 3:09 remaining to be played. An old-fashioned three-point play from Lane Lindsey cut the lead to just three points, 48-45 with 2:01 left. They would get no closer.

Sharp hit four straight free throws in the one-and-one to push the lead back up to seven points, 52-45, and the Wildcats were never closer than six points the rest of the way.
