Cougars beat Daviess County, 62-51

On Tuesday the Cougar boys defeated the visiting Daviess County Panthers 62-51, their seventh win in their last eight games.

Grayson County trailed just once in the game, 1-0 at the 7:11 mark. The game was tied twice, the last time coming at 46-46 with 5:49 left in the fourth quarter. The Cougars responded with a 9-0 run to take a 55-46 lead with 1:59 left to play and the Panthers were never closer than six points until the end.

After Cole Burch hit 1-of-2 at the line at the 7:11 mark to give the Panthers their only lead of the night, junior Keegan Sharp buried a three to make it 3-1. Isaiah Tomes scored on a lay-in with 6:13 left to tie it the first time at 3-3.

Sharp answered with back-to-back threes to put the Cougars up 9-3 and they were off and running. Sophomore River Blanton Closed out the first quarter by hitting a three with 2.3 seconds left to give the Cougars a 25-12 lead heading into the second period. The Cougars had five three-pointers in that first period.

When junior Chandler McCrady opened the second period with a lay-up, the Cougars held their largest lead of the night, 15 points at 27-12. The Panthers responded with a 12-3 run that cut the Cougar lead to just four points, 28-24 with 4:21 left in the first half. Grayson County led by eight points, 37-29 at the half.

After a low-scoring third quarter, the Cougars held a five-point advantage, 46-41. When the Panthers scored the first five points of the final period, the game was tied 46-46.

A lay-in by junior Hunter Tomes with 1:59 left to play completed a 9-0 Cougar run that put the game in the win column for the Cougars.

Burch led the Panthers in scoring with 15 points, while Camron Johnson added 12 points.

Blanton led the Cougars with 18 points and he also led the team on the boards with seven rebounds. Sharp finished right behind Blanton with 17 points and he added two rebounds, two assists, and a steal. McCrady just missed double figures, finishing with nine points.

Tomes finished with seven points, junior Dillon Horn had five, sophomore Nolan Hornbeck scored four, and sophomore Brayden Childress completed the Cougar scoring with two points and he added six rebounds and three assists.
