Kentucky State Police is investigating after an off-duty Corbin officer shot and killed a prowler.

State police said that on Monday morning at approximately 3:30, a Corbin officer was informed by a neighbor on Dogwood Cove in Corbin that a possible prowler was in the area.

The preliminary investigation indicates the officer ‘went outside where he was confronted” by 20-year-old Phillip N. Davenport, of Corbin. The officer and Davenport became involved in an altercation, police said, when the officer shot Davenport.

He was transported to Baptist Health Hospital in Corbin where he was pronounced dead by the Whitley County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy has been scheduled at the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville.

The investigation is ongoing and being led by KSP Sgt. Duane Foley.
