Award-winning Caverna HS teacher dies of complications from COVID-19

An award-winning teacher at Caverna High School has died of complications from COVID-19.

The Caverna Independent School District announced that 36-year-old Amanda Nutt, a math teacher, passed away Wednesday.

“We at the Caverna Independent School District, have suffered a devastating loss, and we are sad to inform you that one of our beloved faculty members, Amanda Nutt has died as a result of complications from Covid 19,” district officials said in a social media post.

Nutt was awarded the Hart County Teacher of the Year award in June 2020. She also received an Excellence in Teaching Award from Campbellsville University in 2021.

“We continue to encourage people to get vaccinated and wear masks indoors and in our schools, as we know these are the primary ways to lessen the impact of this highly contagious virus,” said Toni K. Tatman, Communications Officer with the Kentucky Department of Education.

Several Kentucky school employees have died of COVID during a recent surge in cases, including two staff members at Lee County Elementary at Beattyville, Kentucky.com reports. Several other Kentucky school staff members have been seriously ill from COVID.

As of last Wednesday afternoon, 130 (76 percent) of Kentucky’s 171 school districts had voted to implement mask mandates, according to the Kentucky School Boards Association.
