The Grayson County High School football Cougars got back into the win column on Thursday evening with a 52-7 win over the visiting Ohio County Eagles.

The Cougars were without starting quarterback Kaylor Decker but didn’t miss a step offensively as Hunter Felty filled in with a strong performance. Felty was 12 of 14 passing for 191 yards and 4 touchdowns while also adding 86 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Senior Chandler McCrady added two rushing touchdowns and an interception returned for a TD to pace the Cougars in what was their highest point total ever against Ohio County.

The offense didn’t start off well as an attempted trick play was intercepted by the Eagles on the first play from scrimmage. The defense had a huge answer by driving Ohio County back on three consecutive plays forcing a punt that was downed inside the 10-yard line.

From that point, it was all Grayson County. The Cougars would score on 7 of their next 8 drives with the lone miss being because they got the ball with only 20-seconds left in the first half.

Felty got the offense started as he found Jeren VanMeter on a screen and the sophomore found a patch of green grass to score from 35 yards out.

The next drive saw much of the same success as it ended in a 5-yard touchdown by McCrady to give Grayson the early 14-0 lead.

The Eagles then turned in their best drive of the game moving 56-yards in nine plays that was capped off by a 4th and goal touchdown pass from Jake Simmons to Matthew Smith. That would be the last time Ohio County would see the end zone.

On the ensuing kickoff, VanMeter returned the kick nearly 70-yards to set up perfect field position. Seven plays later, it was Felty who took it himself from five yards out to give Grayson a 20-7 lead.

Ohio County moved the ball with success their next drive, but a long pass was intercepted by freshman Greyson Chaffins to end the threat and the half.

To start the second half, the Cougars recovered an onside kick and punched the ball into the endzone on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Felty to Michael Wood to make it 27-7.

A bad snap on the ensuing drive forced the Eagles to have it third down and long at their own 7-yard line. The quarterback Simmons threw a desperation heave down the near sideline that found the hands of Chandler McCrady who trotted into the endzone untouched for a 20-yard pick-six.

From there, the rout was on. Felty found Wood again for a 50-yard touchdown, McCrady broke a 47-yard touchdown run, and Wood again hauled in a 12-yard touchdown to give the Cougars the lead at 52-7.

The final play of the game saw sophomore Kenton Cornwell pick up his first career interception to solidify the dominating win for Grayson County.

The win pushes the Cougars to 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in district play. They will travel to Owensboro next Friday night for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
