Two babies in Hopkins County survived one of the tornadoes that struck Kentucky when the bathtub they were in was tossed, upside down, into their yard.
The babies’ grandmother, Clara Lutz, told WFIE.com that as the tornado approached, she put 15-month-old Kaden and three-month-old Dallas in a bathtub with a blanket, pillow and Bible.
Soon after, the house began shaking. Then Lutz, who was holding on to the bathtub, lost her grip and the tub was ripped out of the home by the twister.
“Next thing I knew, the tub had lifted and it was out of my hands,” Lutz said. “I couldn’t hold on. I just – oh my God.”
The home was completely destroyed, leaving only the foundation.
Lutz was frantically searching for the children in the darkness when deputies with the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office found the bathtub, upside down, near the end of her driveway with the children inside.
Dallas suffered a head injury and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is recovering.
The babies stay with Lutz on the weekends, she said. The babies’ parents home was untouched by the twister.
