A man has been killed after breaching a gate at Fort Knox and trying strike police cars and police officers.

The incident began Saturday night at approximately 11:00 when Fort Knox police responded to Chaffee Gate, near the U.S. Bullion Depository, on a report of a suspicious man, according to a report by The News Enterprise. When officers arrived, the 41-year-old man, who has not been identified and is not associated with the military, fled police through Chaffee Gate and onto the base where he attempted to strike three police vehicles while being chased.

The pursuit ended in the main cantonment area, otherwise known as the “city section” of Fort Knox, according to the newspaper, with officers attempting to negotiate with the man, who remained in his vehicle. At about 1:20 a.m. Sunday, the man tried to strike officers with his vehicle, with police responding by shooting and killing the suspect.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting remains under investigation by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division.

The newspaper reports that Fort Knox officials said there is no indication the incident was “extremist or terrorist related.”
